Summary

Concrete is all around us. It makes up the buildings we live in, the sidewalks we walk on, the ramps we do our sick skateboard tricks on … but how is it made? How does it go from a thick, sludgy paste into a hard, smooth surface? We asked engineering professor Matthew Adams to help us find the answer.

So cement and concrete are two different things.

1:38.0

I am Matthew Adams. I'm an assistant professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Cement is the fine gray powder that we mix into concrete.

1:51.0

Sometimes people will refer to cement paste, which is a mix of cement and water, as just cement as well.

1:59.0

But for something to become concrete, it needs to be the mix of cement, water, sand, rocks, and actually some

air as well.

2:08.2

Those are the five main components that you need for something to got be concrete.
