I couldn't imagine being there when all this was happening.

It was so disheartening to watch.

When gunmen prowled the streets and your heart is pounding as you hide inside your home.

Your mind goes to every little thing I can imagine that could get you killed.

A smartphone, a personal computer, a single song that you sang so proudly yesterday could bring you

nothing and your family devastation today. Well, this is the reality for millions of Afghan citizens.

Imagine you're faced with this impossible choice. What do you do with your digital world? Everything from

your passport, your text, your financial accounts, your laptops, your tablets, your social media

accounts, everything. Do you just erase it all? Get rid of it for your very own safety? Now that

the Taliban has taken over, millions of people are racing to just get rid of every last

trace of their online lives. Every photo is a link to the past, and the Taliban are cruel. They're

unforgiving. They are just horrible. Here in the United States, we would never really think or even

consider that our government would kill us because of the contents of our phone.

But the Afghans are plunging into a nightmare. After knowing and embracing all the wonders of modern technology,

they don't have any more digital worlds. It's just gone. Imagine if you had to go back.

So many Afghans are finding clever solutions amidst all the chaos. They're backing up their data to the cloud.

They're destroying all the evidence.

But even that is not 100% safe since third parties, you know, they can break into your cloud accounts.
