I was composing a numbered list and I wanted to exit the list in the middle.

Normally on the last line of list, pressing return makes another list item,

and pressing return again ends the list at the previous item.

However, from anywhere in the middle, pressing return repeatedly only makes additional list items.

I found that for any list item I want to eliminate and exit the list experience,

I can simply press Shift tab.

This now seems perfectly natural because the tab indents a list item and converts it to a child

of the parent item and shift tab removes an indent or unendents and changes the child

to a sibling of its parents.
