Summary

This was the key note lecture given at the Thomistic Institute's 8th Annual "Conference for Priests: Evangelizing Your Parish," held July 29th - August 1st, 2019.

The work of evangelization is attractive, but it’s also difficult and perhaps even a bit intimidating. What is more, evangelization can be most challenging at home, within one’s own parish.

Featuring Fr. Peter John Cameron, OP (Province of St. Joseph) Fr. Anthony Giambrone, OP (Ecole Biblique), Fr. James Sullivan, OP (Province of St. Joseph), Fr. Damian Ference (Diocese of Cleveland), Fr. Jay Scott Newman (Diocese of Charleston), Fr. Augustine Wetta, OSB (Monk of St. Louis Abbey).

Thanks for the invitation to present a keynote.

I thought about that word.

0:06.5

It's probably much too pretentious for what I'm sharing this evening.

0:10.6

I would like to put more in a category of just some personal reflections,

0:14.4

just in the context of an informal dinner,

0:17.1

but in the context of getting your program started for the next couple of days.

It really is just personal reflections based on 46 years as a priest and 26 years as a bishop

0:29.4

briefly tonight in the context of our first gathering it's this question how do we carry on the

0:47.0

work of the church in a time of crisis or how do we evangelize in a time of crisis?

1:00.8

Now, when we think about crisis, it strikes me that we have to remember that it's more complicated than we might think.

1:03.0

We speak about crisis today.

1:06.7

We think, first of all, of course, about the sexual abuse crisis.

1:28.2

And we cannot underestimate, we cannot minimize for a moment the great harm that sexual abuse crisis has caused in our church and our society, for the victims and the survivors themselves, of course, for their families, for many, many other faithful members of our church.

1:36.0

It's caused a lot of unhappiness and anger and confusion among even the best intention of people.

1:37.2

So the crisis begins, of course, the sexual abuse crisis, but I don't want to dwell

1:41.6

in that tonight because we've all heard so much about

1:44.4

that, and we'll continue to hear a lot more about it.

1:46.8

There's other manifestations of the crisis as well.

1:49.7

The decline in Sunday mass attendance and the decline, the widespread decline in sacramental

1:56.3

practice.
