The chug-a-chug-a-chug-a-chow of an electric guitar plugged into a wall of amplifiers.

The majestic bass notes of an elephant fart.

Pure poetry to my ears.

Oh, had just so were clear, I always wear earplugs. I love loud stuff, but I don't want to damage my eardrums.

Now there's one sound that really gets my blood pumping. Fireworks!

I live for the 4th of July when fireworks light up the night sky with a boom so deep you can feel it in your chest.

But I've always wondered what makes them go bang?

My buddy Lionel wanted to know too.

I think we need an expert to tell us how fireworks work.

So there's a couple of steps that actually happen.

My name is David Chavez.

I'm a chemist, and I work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. So all fireworks that you see on large displays are pretty much all handmade.

So in the very center you have your bursting charge. That's typically your black powder.

And there's a little fuse that goes up into that bursting charge.

And then around the bursting charge, you have items or little objects that are called stars.

And those stars tend to be like round and the size of like the average size gumball.
