Well, it's a funny story.

I was a graduate student at the University of Georgia,

and I was looking for a major professor

for my getting a PhD.

And I approached this guy, his name was Bob Johannes,

and I was interested at the time

in doing salt marsh and some sort of work on the Georgia coast.

And he had done a great deal of that.

And I walked into his office and I said,

I just got a NSF grant to study coral reefs.

I had thought, hmm, that's interesting.

I had only visited one coral reef in my life

and that was in Pigeon T, Florida.

And so I, not being a fool, I said, well, that sounds interesting.

And so I found myself going to Hawaii very shortly thereafter

to do research in Hawaii as to the marine biology,

which I did for a number of summers.
