Hello today's episode of newscast is one of those episodes where we focus on one subject because it's a biggie and you just need that much time to get into all the different aspects of it and And the subject we're going to focus on today

is the huge big report that's been prepared

by the pediatrician Dr Hillary Cass

into how children and young people in England and Wales,

who were struggling with their gender identity,

were treated by the NHS.

And Dr Hillary, basically the short version

of what she's found is that they were let down for multiple reasons and

she found that some of the medical professionals who were dealing with these vulnerable young people

sort of didn't follow the classic medical rulebook that they used

treatments like purity blockers and sex hormones where there wasn't really a lot

of evidence that those medications actually worked and that in some

cases young people were being treated for their gender questioning but they weren weren't asked whether other things were going on, and they weren't

checked for things like autism or depression or bullying or sexual abuse and this is a really really complicated subject area and I think this moment this report from Dr Hillary Cass is a real I don't want to use a cliche that journalists use all the time, but I'm going to use one. It's a bit of a watershed moment.

And so therefore I think it's right that we spend this whole episode with a friend of the podcast, Hugh Pim, and with Dr. Kast herself just talking about

what all this means so that's what we're gonna do on this newscast.
