I'm 11. Debbie, welcome to the program. Hi, Dr. Laura. Thank you so much for taking my call and I have to tell you I've been with any T for now for about two years on my radio.

0:21.0

I only have a 10 minute ride home from work and sometimes I'll sit in the driveway and I won't come in the house because I need to hear the rest of the story.

0:30.0

But I love listening to your program. I'm calling to see if you could give me some advice on how I can speak to my daughter who recently has been broken up from a four year relationship.

0:46.0

She's had with a man that's six years older than she is. He broke up with her. She is out of the sheet. Is she 12 years old? No, she's not.

1:00.0

I know I listen. I hear you how old is she? She's 27.

1:09.0

I jump. Why do you think you have to jump into the water right now?

1:17.0

Because she called me the other day Friday crying hysterically like we all do. I remember the days of break up. It's very hard.

1:26.0

But why do you that I can understand you taking the phone conversation, but why are you wanting to jump in the water?

1:33.0

I don't want to jump in the water next time I speak to her. I want to have the right words to say to her other than there aren't any right words.

1:43.0

There aren't any right words. We don't know what went on behind closed doors. We dumped her because she's a pain in the ass or he's decided he doesn't want to be responsible. We don't know any of it. There are no right words.

1:58.0

You just listen and say gosh that's that's too bad. You just show sympathy. There are no words of wisdom from you that are going to make it any better.

2:09.0

Okay. Okay, Dr. Laura. I'm just looking for something to help her feel better. She's far away from me.

2:16.0

What did I just say? There is I just said there is nothing you could say that's going to make her feel better. She just got her ass dumped.

2:26.0

Okay. What are you going to say? There's more fish in the sea. He didn't really he wasn't good enough for you.

2:36.0

Yeah. Just listen to her and mostly don't talk. Try to shut up as much as possible and just listen. You can ask benign questions like well what's your plan now?

2:52.0

Maybe she doesn't have one yet. It just happened. So you don't want to ask that yet. But is this change her job? Does this change where she's living? Was she shacking up with him?

3:02.0

Yes. Okay. So he dumped her and she's now got to be physically on her own. So she shacked up for four years with a guy who made no commitment. Great. Well, maybe she's learned something from this. It's possible.

3:15.0

But I wouldn't go poking around to find out if she actually learned something when she started to shack up. Did you warn her? Yes or no?

3:23.0

Oh, yes.

3:25.0

And she ignored you. So you think now that you were right to some extent that she's going to listen.

3:35.0

I understand. Mommy's don't want to see their kids hurting, but she's a grown woman who is making some foolish choices and they have consequences. And the best we can hope for as parents is that they learned from them.
