Summary

If calculated risks keep us growing, why do we stop? There are two contrasting ideas that many of us have about creativity. It’s that we want to stand out and share our work while at the same time we want to fit in. When we stand out, it means we’re not fitting in. We can’t have both. Human nature likes us to fit in, so it becomes very risky behavior to stand out even in a creative world.

If we never make anything, if we make only what’s comfortable or we create something and then never share it, we’re hiding. We all do it. Creatives everywhere are nodding their heads. There is a sense of knowing this truth and a knowing that we need to put ourselves out there. We’re looking for career growth and creative growth to expand our lives and live better. Then again, it feels too risky. It’s not our calling to hide and leave our creative calling dormant. We’re meant to wake it up and nurture it.

Enjoy!

Hey, I got something real simple for you today.

0:07.0

It goes like this.

0:09.0

You can't stand out and fit in at the same time.

0:13.0

Let that linger for just a second.

0:15.0

If you never make anything in this world, if you make only what's comfortable for you,

0:20.0

or if you make stuff but you never

0:22.1

share it, I think you're hiding. And we all do it. This is not about you in particular, but I'm speaking

0:27.4

to you because I know you do it. We all do it. The sad thing about that is once you start hiding,

0:32.8

you stop growing. There's this part of you that when you hide, you become comfortable.

0:39.3

And part of you, when you do that, part of you goes to sleep.

0:42.3

I don't think that this is our calling in life.

0:45.3

I don't think we're supposed to move through life asleep.

0:48.3

I'm thinking back on my own experience and I realize that even when I reached what I thought was say a creative peak in

0:56.8

my life at a certain point. I was awakened metaphorically, I will say, because I was definitely

1:05.2

awake, but it took an avalanche to remind me that I was actually capable of more,

1:11.6

capable of a deeper level of personal awareness,

1:16.6

a deeper level of authenticity.

1:19.6

And if you're not familiar with this avalanche,

1:22.6

I write about it a lot in Creative Calling,

1:24.6

and I've spoken about it before.

1:26.6

But essentially, I was trapped in this avalanche in Alaska, and I've spoken about it before. But essentially I was trapped

1:29.1

in this avalanche in Alaska and I thought that I was everything I wanted to be. And then I realized
