Hello Explorer. We're out there. We're journeying through the universe. We're on our adventures and it's all about your questions in a brand new science quest. My name is Dan and every week we unpack your science questions. We cover everything in the universe, anything that you are wondering about

0:21.2

what's happening, what's out there, what's going on on planet Earth, what's happening inside

0:24.7

your body, in your brain. We do the whole lot if you have a question you aren't answered. Make

0:29.9

sure you leave it as a voice note for me on the free FunKids app. You can do it at funkidslive.com

0:35.8

too, like this one, from JJ.

0:39.9

Hi, Dan. I'm JJ. I'd like to know, please, why two ostrich is not fly. Thank you.

0:49.4

Hey, JJ, why don't ostriches fly? Well, they don't need to. Really? You probably want a longer answer than that.

0:58.7

It's all to do with evolution. Ostriches don't need to fly because they've got strong muscles and

1:04.7

thick bones that helps them fight other animals on the ground. They need to be really quick. They need

1:10.4

to be strong to hunt creatures

1:12.2

because they live in Africa where there's loads of big animals around. So them as the biggest bird,

1:17.8

they need to do their best to take them down because they're kind of near the top of that food chain.

1:23.9

They can't fly because they're kind of too heavy really and they very simply don't need to.

1:30.3

They don't really need to fly away from other predators because they're really fast.

1:34.0

They've evolved to favour being strong, being quick on the ground, than being able to fly.

1:41.7

It's the same with other birds.

1:43.8

Look at a penguin. Well a penguin lives on the

1:46.2

South Pole. There aren't really any predators around that want to eat them, so they don't need to fly,

1:50.3

but they do need thick, blubbery fat to keep them warm. That helps them dive down in the ocean. So

1:56.0

their wings aren't strong enough to lift them off the ground, so they don't need to fly. That's what's happening,

2:03.1

really. If a creature doesn't do so much, it's because they've evolved without that skill,

2:08.0

because they don't need it anymore. JJ, thank you so much for the question. Here's one from Steen.
