If you have any level of K-12 education, you've probably been to a museum on a field trip. Now if you live in a large city, you're fortunate to go to a really nice museum like the field museum of natural history in Chicago where you can see T-Rex skeletons.

Your offerings were slimmer if you grew up in a more rural environment like me. In Central Iowa, maybe we could see an underground railroad house or living history farms, which is sort of a more modest version of colonial Williamsburg.

But a museum is much more than just a collection of artifacts. In some ways, it's how a society understands itself or wants to understand itself because it chooses what stories are told or foregrounded and it determines how the past is exhibited, framed, and talked about.

I mean, this isn't me just speculating. Sometimes this is written directly into the mission statement of a museum.

For example, the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum was founded right after the conclusion of World War II when the United States was the world's aviation superpower and held air superiority on huge swats of the globe.
