I'm Ian Bremmer, and today I am taking stock of a war that has been 50 years in the making.

President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act of 1971, officially launching what

would come to be known as America's War on Cancer.

Since then, hundreds of billions of dollars have gone into research, prevention, and treatment,

and yet cancer continues to kill.

Roughly one in two men and one in three women in the United States

will be diagnosed during their lifetimes, and it remains the nation's second leading cause of

death after heart disease, claiming nearly 1,700 lives every single day. But there's been

progress, too. Survival rates have increased dramatically. Nearly

19 million Americans today are cancer survivors. That's one in 18 people alive compared with

one in 40 back in 1991. Since then, the overall cancer death rate has dropped by 34%, sparing more

than 4.5 million lives.

Cancer is personal. Both my parents died from it. If you haven't faced it yourself, you know

someone who has. But my guest today gives me reason to believe that technology may be finally

tipping the scales in our favor. As artificial intelligence continues to advance,

we could be at the beginning of the most significant medical advancement of our lifetimes.

Joining me to talk about how AI is reshaping medicine and the fight against cancer is physician

and best-selling author of the Emperor of All Malities, Sir Arthur Mokuchi.
