Solomon closes the book of Ecclesiastes with these words. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter.

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

Everybody loves a good story.

In fact, I've found that what is true in the ancient world, in the Middle Eastern world,

even today, people love to teach truth by narrative is actually true of all humans. We just all love a good

story. Well, Solomon, the preacher, is going to use a tremendous story in our text today in

Ecclesiastes chapter 9, a story to tell us how one little man made a big difference.

Let me read the verses.

Ecclesiases chapter 9, beginning in verse number 13, down to verse 18, the rest of

this chapter, says, this wisdom, have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me.

There was a little city, and few men within it, and there came a great

king against it and besieged it and built great bulwarks against it. Did you see the great contrast

here? You have a little city and few men on one side, and on the other side, a great king and great bulwarks.

Now, this sounds to me like the majority rule.

It sounds to me like the strongest will survive, you see.

You immediately think, well, this great king with his big army is going to overrun the little city. But then it says in verse 15, now there was found in it a poor, wise man. And he, by his

wisdom, delivered the city. Yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, wisdom is

better than strength. Nevertheless, the poor man's wisdom is

despised and his words are not heard. The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry

of him that ruleth among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroyeth

...
