Hello out there on the internet. I am Matthew Galtz, and this is Cyber.

Now, we don't get a lot of feel-good stories on this show. It's always hacking and tribulation on the podcast.

So we thought we'd do something a little different until the story of someone who fought back

against abuse and won. Nicole Gilliland is a former nursing student who began to experience

discrimination when people at the nursing college she attended began to dig into her past.

Gilliland was just trying to get a nursing degree, but the faculty at Southwestern Oregon Community

College decided she wasn't fit because she'd formally performed in porn. She sued, she won,

a jury awarded her 1.7 million in damages, and the precedent set could have far-reaching

consequences. With me here today is Motherboard's senior editor, Samantha Cole, who recently wrote about

the case and the student who lived through it, Nicole Gilliland.
