For decades, the Israeli-Palestinian issue has been one of the most divisive and disputed subjects of our time.

Getting to grips with it can feel daunting, and at times difficult to know where to begin.

I think the hardest thing about this is firstly what you leave out, because you could write a book about it and many people have.

And then the other very difficult element is of course there are so many

differing interpretations of history. Every part of this decades-long

conflict is contested, often passionately.

And when nothing is settled, even the history of the region becomes a battleground because there

isn't agreement on where that history begins.

Yeah, I've got a number of emails from people suggesting what the starting point may be.

Plenty of people went back centuries before even the Romans.

One person wrote to me and suggested I should have begun in 686 with a Muslim invasion. We won't be going back that far, but over the
