So on Wednesday afternoon, Indiana state lawmakers, they convened for the 25 session of the Indiana General Assembly.

Some lawmakers have already introduced bills and joining us here in the WIBC Studios as one of those lawmakers.

His name is J.D. Prescott.

One of the seven people I like in the State House, Casey, we found him.

One of seven. Wow. It's an old really an elite club there, JD. All right. So let's get right to it.

You've got two bills that I think are very, very interesting. And I think you have the bill that really could

fix a lot of the problems with public education in our state. You have a bill that would make electing school board members like every other

elected office in our state, you got to say, I'm a Democrat, I'm a Republican, I'm a Libertarian.

That's correct. It's House Bill 1230. And what this bill does is it just simply requires

school board candidates when they go to file to be on the ballot to select a Republican Democrat or they could still choose nonpartisan

independent.

And then it does still have the two primary process to make sure that they are actually

Republicans or Democrats, you're not just party flipping back and forth.

This is a general election designation and just really aligns our school board elections with the rest of

every other elected office in the state.

Why has this been a thing where this is this one office gets this special treatment?

Why has that been a thing?

Yeah.

So when they were originally created as nonpartisan offices, I think that the intent was that

school board offices aren't supposed to be political, but we're kidding ourselves.
