I was 21 years old, fixing to get married that fall.

And my third year of selling Bibles for Southwestern Company, and they assigned me to Forest Mississippi and Philadelphia, Mississippi. Now, that's the

summer of 1964. Yes, sir. Summer of Mississippi Burning.

Soon after we got there, the rumor got out that civil rights workers were coming down there,

masquerading these Bible salesmen.

And, of course, it scared most of my crew's death, and about half of them went home without even selling the book.

But anyway, Cheney and Swearington and, oh, I can't remember the other civil rights workers were missing.

And the FBI was down there in Philadelphia and around trying to find what had happened to them.
