| 0:16.6 | Now, here are your hosts, Michael Bumpus and Stacey Ross. It's a football Friday, power by this from Qualmie Casino and Hotel, the athletic football shows, Derek Classen, joining us right now. We've had you on the show before. You're always wonderful. The weirdest thing to me, it's my first time at Radio Row, my first Super Bowl. I'm assuming it's not yours. Last year was my first, so still pretty fresh. So I'm where |
| 0:37.8 | you were last year, where it's just crazy to see everyone in person. And I'm just a random local |
| 0:43.6 | host, right? Then you guys have national, you know, hopping on with things. It's very, very weird. |
| 0:48.3 | So I'm happy to see people that we actually recognize having on and have talked to before. |
| 0:51.9 | We appreciate your time. I'm going to start by having |
| 0:55.1 | you narrow down from a lot of choices. What is the single most important matchup in your mind |
| 1:01.2 | that will decide this game? The single most important matchup to me is, so I'm a foregone conclusion |
| 1:05.9 | seems wrong, but like I think the Seattle defense is going to handle the Patriots offense fairly |
| 1:10.2 | well. So to me, it's the other side of the ball. |
| 1:29.2 | It's how many times does Milton Williams and Christian Barmore beat Anthony Bradford and Grace Abel? And, you know, Bradford's kind of been up and down all year. Grace Abel was great up until kind of that week 11 got injured against the Rams. And I think he's been a little bit more up and down since then. and so that's a nasty defensive tackle duo, he those guys got. And so if they get to Sam eight times instead of only four times, that to me is probably the difference in this one. What do you like most about Greg May? He is, for a young quarterback, it's alarming how just sharp he is, like reading stuff pre-snap, ball is out immediately. He's very accurate. I just feel like he is very put together in a way you don't see from a lot of young quarterbacks. Like I think when I watch, there was a little bit of that with Jaden Daniels last year too where like just his ability to beat the Blitz, balls out immediately. Like those young guys who come in and can immediately do that, it's really impressive to me. It actually reminds me of like the two guys where I really felt that early on were Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert. Those guys came into the league immediately and was like, that's a professional. Whereas like, you know, some of the superstar seasons we saw from, Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson's, they have become more like pocket pass or mature quarterbacks. but they kind of came in just as the most, like, |
| 2:17.9 | they are just way more athletically gifted than everybody else. And with the Chiefs, it's like kind of caught fire. Like you have Tyreek Hill, this connection to Travis Kelsey. It was like for me to come in and have, he has some of that like put togetherness and is also the best athlete on the field. It's just, he's kind of a unique guy. Yeah. I want to flip back to the Patriots defense. I know that they get a lot of flack for their schedule. And like, it makes sense. It's very easy schedule. It's important context. How I'm assuming you've gone back and taken a closer look. How's the defense looked against maybe some of their biggest challenges, best quarterback's best offenses? It It's, you know, to me, I think through weeks one through 13, they were kind of fake. They were playing against a lot of just really bad offenses and bad quarterbacks and stuff like that. But I do think once they came out of their buying week 15, the first game they've actually played well as the Buffalo Bills. And I thought they called a really good game there. They really started to dial up the pressure. |
| 3:40.9 | They were playing different coverages than they had before, a little bit more man, whereas early in the year they weren't doing as much of that. And they really started to find what their identity was going to be. And I think since then and through the playoff run, they've been really good at identifying, okay, how do we get pressure here? How do we scheme up free rushers? How much do we turn the dial on the blitz? Like, I just think they've, they were kind of bad until they weren't. And I actually do think they're kind of a decent defense now. Any surprises from last night NFL honors? Surprises. I'm surprised. So I know this is a Seattle show. I would have voted for Pooka and Kua for offensive player of the year. I'm shocked he wasn't second. |
| 3:42.6 | Him not being second over Christian McCaffrey. |
| 3:44.9 | McCaffrey obviously had a great year. |
| 3:46.7 | That to me was a little bit shocking. |
| 3:48.5 | I was also surprised that Mike Vrable ran away with coach in the year. |
| 3:53.1 | I thought that was a little crazy. |
| 3:54.4 | Like I actually would have to get some stuff back here. |
