It's official, we are living through the hottest summer on record.

Specifically, August was the second hottest month ever measured for the Northern Hemisphere,

according to the World Meteorological Organization,

and the first hottest month was just the one before, in July.

And together, they helped this summer set a new seasonal record.

Scientists say there's a couple reasons why this summer is unique.

One, an alineo event in the tropical Pacific Ocean,

which adds more heat to the oceans and the air.

And two, climate change.
