It's Wednesday on Things Unseen, and this week we've been thinking about family life.

0:14.6

It's a tremendous amount of work, isn't it, if you're a parent?

0:18.5

But then, God willing, you have these moments when it seems the sun breaks

0:22.3

through and you realize what an amazing thing it is to have a family. What a blessing that God has

0:29.1

set the solitary in a home. It wasn't good for Adam to be alone, and it's not usually very good

0:35.9

for us either. One of the things that strikes me

0:39.9

0:51.4

0:55.3

1:21.1

The second is that although it's the fifth commandment, it's the first commandment about our

1:25.9

relations with others. Commandments one through four

1:29.2

have got to do with our honoring of the Lord. And that's true even of the fourth commandment,

1:33.8

the Sabbath Day, although it too has implications for others. They need to rest as well.

1:41.5

But the third thing to notice is it's a lifelong commandment.

1:46.1

But notice, it doesn't say children honour your father and mother.

1:52.1

It says everybody honour your father and mother.

1:55.6

It doesn't just apply to years one through 18 or whatever.
