Welcome to the Double X Gap Test for Thursday, February 19th, the Honor Your Sox edition. I'm Hannah Rosen, a writer at Slate. I'm joined in the New York

studios by June Thomas, editor of Outward Slate's LGBTQ blog. Hi, June. Hey, Hannah. And Noreen

Malone of New York Magazine. Hi, Hannah. June, the great British baking show, you have converted

three generations of our family. Wow. Like a warm bath. I love that show so much. I know. And it makes me A, so very hungry and B almost makes me want to start baking. And I'm just going to start with advanced doughs. Like, I'm not going to mess with pies or anything basic. Advanced does. I want to proof that thing. We use proof as a verb in our house now to mean everything. What is proof? Well, sometimes you've got to, yeah, exactly. You know, before you, if you want to get a good bake, some things you've got to prove them. I think, I don't even know what it means. I think it means rise in English. Yeah, it's like you have to do with bread. What is the verb for that? In English baking, in America baking, you only proof yeast. It's like just to make sure that the yeast works. You don't proof anything else. I think most of the things that are proof do have yeast in them. Right, but you would just say like a rise or a second rise. Anyway, it's confusing. They use proof for so many different contexts that I've never heard it.

Can I ask you a question? Yeah. Maybe this is just my obsessive eGomania, but Sue Perkins, like, she's the British me, right? Totally. Because I would have like that job if I'd stay in Britain. I was afraid to say that, June, but she is totally you.
