Some protesters tossed firebombs at police, and tear gas and water cannons have become commonplace.

The rhetoric is also heating up, with protesters arguing that Beijing shouldn't be allowed to use Hong Kong as an open society for economic gain without actually letting it be an open society.

China, with some in Hong Kong trying to use that

as a wedge, pushing a bill that would require greater U.S. government scrutiny of the city's status
