Summary

Today Abraham Pittman joins us to discuss how to apply engineering (particularly field service engineering) to homesteading and prepping, so examples include: Triaging problems, ie, make sure your chickens have reliable water systems before building a roll away nesting box. Developing systems and procedures, ie, maintenance regimes, and things similar to the documentation package you talk about. Calculating risk/cost benefit analysis, ie, is it best to just let a lawn mower run until it dies, compared to letting a generator run until it dies ` Abraham Pitman is a field service engineer, homesteader, and practical prepper based in North Queensland, Continue reading →

There's a better way to do this.

0:05.0

Let me show you a better way.

And we are live, folks, just a few minutes earlier then scheduled, which is good as late in the day as we're starting today.

0:24.1

We're about three hours after our normal start time, which means I'm usually finishing up right about now.

0:29.3

But this was worth doing.

We have a special guest named Abraham Pittman, and he is an engineer.

0:35.5

He is also a homesteader.

0:38.8

And he's going to be talking to us today about those two things put together, homesteading with an engineering mindset.

0:46.2

I think this is something that really fits well.

0:49.9

And what I found is like some of the best people I know in the permaculture space are not actually

0:55.6

known that heavily as permaculture people. You know, like when I think of Alan Booker as a perfect

1:04.0

example, he actually has a PDC that he does for people that is only for engineers. Now, anybody can take it, but he's like, if you don't have an engineering background,

1:14.5

it's probably not going to work out for you.

1:16.5

And then the other thing I've always noticed is, like, some of the best engineers I know,

1:20.7

now they may not be credentialed engineers.

1:22.6

Maybe they didn't go to college or engineering school or something like that.

1:25.4

But they are engineers in what they do by trade.

1:29.6

Are farmers.

1:31.3

I have seen farmers come up with some of the most ingenious systems thinking oriented

1:36.8

projects of any group of people anywhere.

1:40.6

And it makes perfect sense, especially when you're talking like, you know, you're kind

1:43.7

of old school farmer, your guy that has a few hundred acres, maybe even up like 1,200 or something.
