| 0:00.0 | Hey everyone. Welcome to the Durenda Wilson podcast. I'm Dorenda. I am married to Daryl and we have eight kids |
| 0:19.1 | who were born between 1991 and 2004. I'll let you |
| 0:23.2 | do the math on that one. And we've been homeschooling for over 24 years, and one of my favorite |
| 0:31.6 | things to do is to encourage moms. That's really what my podcast is all about. And sometimes I talk about |
| 0:39.0 | homeschooling. Sometimes I talk about just normal mom issues and mom stuff. But today I'm going to be |
| 0:45.4 | talking about homeschooling and specifically homeschooling with purpose or for performance. |
| 0:53.1 | Now, I think what I need to do is start out by telling you what I don't mean by performance. |
| 0:59.4 | What I don't mean is that our children never have to meet a standard, they never have to try |
| 1:04.3 | their hardest or do their best, that somehow when they're performing well, they're probably suffering in another area. |
| 1:15.0 | I don't want to send that kind of message at all because we know what God's word says about diligence |

| 1:30.2 | So God is very much about doing our best and about becoming skilled in what we're doing. |
| 1:41.8 | But today what I'm talking about, when when I talk about performance is I'm talking |
| 1:47.6 | about these man-made standards that don't come from God, that we put on ourselves and that we put on |
| 1:57.6 | our children. And so much of the time, those standards are rooted in what other people think. |
| 2:04.5 | They are rooted in fear. |
| 2:06.9 | And we all know, I say this all the time, it's never a good idea to make any decision out of fear. |
| 2:12.7 | But we're afraid that we're going to shortchange our kids somehow if we don't meet all of these performance standards that can sometimes be conveyed to us, either from other people, through our culture, through reading, through, sometimes even through our homeschool co-ops and our well-meaning homeschooling friends. |
| 2:35.8 | Because I think what we forget is that there are as many different ways to educate as there are |
| 2:42.8 | fingerprints. But we've forgotten that because the traditional school system has put a sort of |
| 2:49.2 | system in place that just is for the herd. It's not individualized. |
| 2:55.5 | It's not customized to meet most children's needs, their real needs. And I know that for most |
