What's in a name?

Well, actually, more than you might think. In fact, have you heard of onomastics? It's a field of study, and it means the study of proper names. What do names mean?

Where did they come from? Names are descriptive. They distinguish us from others.

Leading up to Easter Sunday, we're going to study some of the names of Jesus, and as we do,

we're going to learn a lot about who he is. We're going to get to know him better.

Well, this weekend, we're going to be celebrating Palm Sunday, but I want to take a moment to look at one of the gospel accounts of the triumphal entry into Jerusalem that we celebrate as Palm Sunday. I'm looking at John chapter 12, the gospel of John chapter 12, beginning in verse 12. The next day, the large crowd that had come to the feast

heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. Now Jerusalem is in Judah, the kingly tribe, and Jerusalem

is known as the city of the great king. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him,
