| 0:35.3 | talking about your experiences. You were born in Budapest, capital of Hungary, |
| 0:39.6 | 1937, really on the eve of obviously the cataclysm of World War II in the Holocaust. |
| 0:45.0 | Just to start with your memories and also what you know about your family in the run-up to the |
| 0:52.3 | horrors of the Holocaust. |
| 0:54.0 | Well, Hungary had a history of anti-Semitism |
| 1:00.0 | almost from the end of the First World War onwards. |
| 1:07.0 | And for example, my father, because of racist laws of numerous clauses, it was called had to do some of his medical |
| 1:16.7 | training in Prague because he was barred in Hungarian university. |
| 1:22.8 | So we had an autocratic right-wing regime |
| 1:29.4 | which fostered anti-Semitism, |
| 1:32.3 | but not in a violent manner and the situation got much worse |
| 1:38.7 | during the Second World War which reached Budapest and Hungary quite late in the war in |
| 1:47.6 | 1944 when the Germans lost faith in the Hungarian, hesitant Hungarian ruler Horti, who started to have background negotiations about leaving the alliance with Hitler. |
| 2:08.0 | And therefore, they decided to invade Hungary, which happened in March 44. |
| 2:16.0 | And that stemmed as a critical date for the Jewish population |
