Summary

Why has Hollywood made so few movies that are critical of the Soviet Union? Western filmmakers pumped out mountains of anti-Nazi films during the few short years of WWII, but very few anti-USSR movies over the long Cold War. The reasons for this are fascinating, and so are these few films. In this episode we will discuss "White Nights," which pits the KGB against ballet and tap dancers, and still manages to one of the most realistic movies ever made.

If you're like me, you have asked yourself many times, why are there so few anti-Soviet movies

0:07.7

made by Western filmmakers?

0:15.9

Welcome back to another T-Rex talk. Very likely you have not asked yourself this question, but start

0:22.4

thinking about it. It's kind of interesting to me that there are tons and tons and tons of

0:28.2

anti-Nazi World War II movies that are made during World War II, unsurprising, because propaganda

0:33.2

is a thing, but that is the majority of the war movies that are made by Hollywood during the

0:38.1

Cold War. The Cold War is longer, and the victims of the various Soviet Holocaust outnumber

0:45.6

those of the Nazi Holocaust, and the potential for global war was higher that even what we

0:51.8

experienced during World War II, and yet, there's just not a

0:54.7

whole lot of movies about the Cold War. Now, there are quite a few movies where the Soviets and

1:00.8

the communists and various socialists and Marxists actually are pretty well lionized in these films.

1:07.7

Films that are critical of socialism, communism, or even Stalin himself, fairly rare.

1:13.8

Now, there are more of them now. They're starting to be a few. Hollywood did make, and a bunch of

1:19.5

fairly high-level Hollywood comedians made a film called The Death of Stalin, kind of lampooning

1:24.4

what the Soviet Union was like. But this is the sort of film that probably

1:28.7

would not have been made, even in the 80s, when some of that stuff was being criticized by

1:34.3

Gorbachev himself. There's a film called Bitter Harvest about the famines in Ukraine.

1:40.6

And now that Russia has invaded Ukraine and everybody in the intelligentsia and the mainstream media has picked sides,

1:47.1

we will probably start to see more anti-Russian films that are set during the Soviet Union times.

1:55.0

But for most of the Cold War itself, anti-Soviet films extremely rare.

2:01.6

Now, part of the reason for this is something that we have talked about before on the podcast,

2:05.6

which was in the 30s, people tried to paint there being only two sides in the 20th century conflicts.
