Summary

The art of herbal formulation is… well just that- an art!! The #1 mistake too many herbalists make when it comes to formulating is that they think about what organ system they want to work with and BAM- throw every herb they can think of that doesΒ something to that system andΒ hope that it will work.

I don't want you to be aΒ hopeΒ formulator!!

Rather I want you to be a strategic and intelligent formulator.Β In this video I laid out a simple process that I use when I'm thinking through creating an herbal formula. It basically sums up to thinking about what organ affinity I want the herb to operate on, what specific actions I want the plants to have on those organ systems, and most importantly, what specific energetics I want the net effect of the formula to have (IE hot, cold, wet or dry). From there I will think of any supplemental or additional actions or organ systems that will help achieve the net result of the formula.

Too many herbalists stop at the organ system, or will simply keep it at herbal actions, without thinking about the overall net effect of the herbs on not just the organs, but the entire constitution as a whole, as well as other secondary organ systems.

But the important part of formulation isΒ the selection of the individual remedies and having them targetΒ the broadest spectrum of effects we want to achieve.Β

Hey there everybody, Sageja here, and I was at the whiteboard today shooting some videos for my online program.

0:39.3

And, you know, we've been doing some content this week on the respiratory system and you know one of the landmates out here had has came down with a

0:44.9

respiratory tract infection ironically enough and so I was thinking today

0:49.8

about respiratory formulas and thought I just shoot a a little, a quick little video here,

0:56.1

kind of demonstrating how I tend to think through formulas and just kind of put up a metaphorical

1:04.3

respiratory system formula. So one of the ways that I primarily think through creating a formula is, first off, I'm thinking about what herbal actions do I want.

1:17.5

So maybe I'll write some of these down.

1:19.1

So I'm thinking about what herbal actions do I want, right?

1:24.7

I'm thinking about what organ affinity do I want.

1:29.3

Oh, sorry, my pen's not doing so great. Actions affinity.

1:33.3

So what organ do I want? What type of herbal actions do I want?

1:37.3

And then what do I want generally the net energetics to be?

1:41.3

So by energetics, that would be hot, cold, wet, dry, stimulating, relaxing, or tonifying.

1:48.0

So in general, those are the three things that I'm thinking of when I'm putting together a formula.

1:54.0

And of course, to get to that information, you got to, well, essentially ask really good questions to your client or to your patient

2:04.6

so that you can determine what different types of actions, energetics, and affinities that you need.

2:12.6

Now for a respiratory formula, of course, we're primarily going for the expector in action is going to be our

2:20.7

major herbal action that encompasses the lungs and the respiratory system and of course our affinity

2:28.3

would be our lungs and our respiratory system now that's primary I think it's good when someone's sick to look at

2:36.0

what other kind of secondary actions that you might want. So say someone has

2:40.8

someone's say someone has kind of a mixed wet and dry cough and it tends to be kind
