During this week, we are revisiting five lectures given by Father Daniel Theeman, the rector of Holy Cross Seminary in Australia, about the history of the Society of St. Pius the 10th.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, amen. So last time that I visited Singleton,

I remarked that this was the 50th anniversary

of the founding of the Society of St. Pius, the Tenth,

and it might be good for us to go through

some of the chief events in the course of the last 50 years

and try to draw some lessons

for our own spiritual lives.

And last time I spoke about the founding of the society, and in the context of that, I spoke about

these two qualities of our soul, these two virtues that we need to have, which are on the one hand a generosity,

which is an active virtue, if you will, which prompts us to take initiative to do things for

God, but also this virtue of docility to the providence of God, where we wait and try to discern

the will of God through the circumstances of life.

And that, of course, is more passive, where we let God take the initiative and we try to read his will in those circumstances.

And I remarked that although these two things are both necessary, naturally speaking, they are very

difficult to have together, because by temperament, we tend to be either more active and generous

or more passive and docile. And yet it's necessary to be both. And so only by the grace of God

can those two things be harmonized in our soul.
