Summary

Hello and welcome to the History of the Germans Podcast, the podcast that does exactly what it says on the tin. What you get here is a narrative history of the German people from the early Middle Ages to German Reunification in 1991 in 35-40 minute episodes coming out every Thursday.

We are 200 episodes in, but do not worry, you do not need to listen to all 200 for it to make sense. The show is now split into seasons which are almost stand alone. So you can listen to any one of theose and skip the rest. Let me tell you a little bit about these season....

The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.

Now the 200th episode of the History of the Germans podcast is just dropped, which sounds terrifying,

0:28.8

even more so to myself. But it shouldn't be. You do not need to listen to all the 200 episodes

0:34.8

for it to make sense, even though they're quite good actually.

0:39.8

The show is therefore broken down into so far 10 seasons.

0:43.2

Each season should be more or less standalone, so you can go and listen to any one of them

0:48.2

and skip all the others.

0:50.7

Now let me tell you what each of these seasons is about. The seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4 tell the story of the early and the high Middle Ages, the time when the empire was indeed, holy, Roman and an empire.

defeats of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in Italy, and the life of Frederick II,

1:17.3

the wonder of the world, and probably the most intriguing figure of the whole of the Middle

Ages.

1:22.7

All that is interspersed with some thoughts on the economy, science, theology, art, architecture and or

1:29.4

mythology, which is that stuff about birds.

1:33.3

Seasons 5, 6 and 7 at start around episode 95, talk about what happened in the north and

1:39.6

the east of the empire.

1:41.3

Because you have to remember, German history is not a linear storyline as English

1:45.4

or French history. As the imperial power had focused more and more on Italy and then almost

1:50.7

disappeared, the Germans north of the mine and east of the Rhine had to forge their own path.

So in season five, we talk about the largest movement of populations that happened between the
