Welcome everyone to our series on the most important battles in the Civil War.

This is possibly our marquee episode, The Battle of Gettysburg.

If you know very little about the Civil War, which before the series, I would include

myself in this camp.

And depending on what you think of my opinions, you might still think I'm in that camp,

but definitely not James, who has been guiding us through this very well.

We are going to look at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Remember in the last episode, we looked at the fall of Vicksburg, which was a critical

city that allowed the Confederacy to maintain control of the Mississippi River, allowed

it to ferry equipment and troops up and down it.

Most importantly gave them access to the American West and Mexico, and gave them the supplies

they needed to continue the war effort.

Vicksburg fell, which some refer to Vicksburg as one of, if not the, turning points of

the Civil War.

But at the end of Vicksburg, after the city's fall, news came from the east of something

else that happened and that was catastrophic for the Confederacy, but we didn't mention

what that was.

Well, Gettysburg, you may have heard about it in class, if you're from the United States.
