Every once in a while, a form of music comes along that makes it its mission to break with the traditions of rock and rule.

Okay, maybe not entirely. I mean, the instrumentation is largely the same. You know, voice,

guitars, bass, drums, maybe some electronics. But it's the way these instruments are used. That's

often followed by presenting the music that's made in a completely different way. And it's not a

calculated thing. It's usually the result of a bunch of kids who don't know that there

are rules when it comes to rock, and the right people come together and just start to play.

And who cares what anyone else thinks? Such was the case in the early 80s when a small group of

people started to run guitars through a bunch of effects pedals and then turned everything up as

loud as possible. The result was a wall of sound pedals, and then turned everything up as loud as possible.

The result was a wall of sound, the kind of which no one had ever heard before.

It hit you in the chest and pummeled you into submission, threatening to liquefy your internal organs.

It was an impenetrable sonic blast.

But it was more than that. This music was also rather atmospheric.

There were vocals, but you couldn't really make out all the words. And once you got used to the

volume, you started to hear notes and harmonics that you didn't hear before. If you stuck with it,

you began to get kind of floaty.

It's the best way I can describe it.
