On this episode of five minutes in church history we are trying something a little different usually we talk about things within theism and we are very much interested in a theistic tradition

0:11.6

But today let's talk about the opposite of that and the history of atheism.

0:16.2

Well you could say atheism goes all the way back to the very beginning, back to the garden.

0:21.8

You could say it goes back to the Psalms, isn't it?

0:23.8

Psalm 14 verse 1 that says, the fool has said in his heart, there is no God.

1:28.8

1:36.6

magazines in the colonies and he would be used from time to time to comment on current events or to add some color to current events. But what

1:47.1

we really find in the 1700s and into the 1800s is the precursor to atheism which is

1:52.1

deism.

1:53.0

So theism of course believes in a god who created the world,

1:56.0

a god who is active in sustaining the world.

1:58.0

Theism has with it the idea of sovereignty and providence
