President Obama opens a door to Cuba.

Hello again, I'm Armin Alney, and this is To the Point from Public Radio International.

A daily look at the issues Americans care about most.

More than 50 years after the U.S.

ended diplomatic relations with Cuba,

President Obama renewed them today.

These 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked.

It's time for a new approach.

The administration will open an embassy in Havana,

ask Congress to end the trade embargo,

and use other means to improve Cuba's human rights record.

We'll hear how the deal came about, the role of Pope Francis, and will sample political reaction.

Later on, Jeb Bush is the first major player to go public about a possible run for the White House in 2016.

We'll handicap the likely candidates from both political parties.
