Americans who have been held in Russian prisons are finally back on US soil. They were released in the largest prisoner swap since the height of the Cold War and landed at

joint base Andrews in Maryland last night.

They include two prominent Americans who were held on espionage charges, American journalist

Evan Gerschkevich, who spent 16 months in a Russian prison, and

former Marine Paul Whelan, who was arrested back in 2018.

The swap also involved many others from the U.S. Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, Russia and Belarus.

Russia alone released 16 prisoners.

The US government says many of them were wrongly accused or handed heavy sentences for minor
