In 2023, the federal government counted a record number of homeless people in America,

over 650,000.

That was 70,000 more than just a year earlier, which is the largest increase since the government

started keeping records. Much of that increase has been in the Western

United States which has seen a rapid growth in homeless encampments in

particular. Many citizens in the West have become frustrated with the growing encampments and have sued

cities to clean them up.
