His grandmother's funeral was the first time anyone handed him something that had belonged to his mother.

The box wasn't much to look at.

Dust coated the cardboard, the tape had yellowed with age, and one corner looked like it had

been repaired more than once over the years. Most of the family had spent the afternoon

sorting through furniture, photographs, and keepsakes, deciding what would be donated and what would stay in the family.

Near the end of the day, one of his uncles pointed toward the box sitting in the corner of

a spare bedroom and casually mentioned that it had belonged to Elena. For a moment, he didn't

know what to say. His mother had been dead for 26 years. She had been murdered when he

was only a few months old, leaving him with no memories of her and very few answers about who she had been.

Everything he knew came from stories told by relatives, old photographs, and brief conversations

that always seemed to end before they became meaningful.

When he was younger, he assumed that was simply how families handled tragedy. As he got older,

he began to suspect there was more to it. The basic facts never changed. His mother had been

killed. The case had never truly been solved. There had been suspects and rumors, but no conviction.

Beyond that, the details became strangely difficult to pin down. Different relatives remembered events
