New Orleans is a city with no shortage of ghost stories. Most have probably heard of the

very haunted Lollary Mansion. There's no big surprise that the mansion has several

stories surrounding it with the atrocities that took place there. There are also vampire

stories such as the Carter Brothers and Jacque has St. Germain. You can't mention New

Orleans without bringing up the name Marie LeVole or the very haunted St. Louis Cemetery

I where her tomb is. With that being said, there's another tomb in New Orleans that gets

a lot of attention. Today you will learn about that tomb, the tomb of Josie Arlington.

One of the most famous ghost stories is that of the death and burial of Miss Josie Arlington.

Josie was the most colorful and infamous madame in New Orleans. Most do not know this, but

from 1897 to 1917, New Orleans was the site of America's largest and most successful

experiment in legalized prostitution. Before 1897, there was an overabundance of women

in the street selling their goods. This was very concerning to the city's forefathers.

Realizing that they would never be able to completely do away with the practice, the

logical step was to find a way to contain and control it.

Alderman's Sydney story had the best plan. Plan was to create a 38 square block area

where prostitution was legal and could thus be controlled. Alderman's story was not

pleased with the fact that the area was named Storyville after him.

It was within Storyville that Josie Arlington practiced her profession and became very,

very rich. She operated the finest portello in the district. She served up beautiful
