Summary

Therapist, researcher and writer Hillary McBride is back on the show, this time to talk about toxic masculinity. Hillary takes us through some of the various characteristics and manifestations of toxic masculinity, reflects on why it has become so pervasive in Western society, why it often show up in our images of God and in the religious leaders we follow, and how men can begin to recognise and move beyond these limiting and oppressive social constructions.

After the interview, Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Joy Brooks reflect on their own experiences of toxic masculinity, how it shaped the faith they inherited, and how they now understand and relate to gender.

Interview starts at 16m 35s

The Welcome back to Nomad podcast. I'm Tim Nash, not put off by the requirement to read the Bible for the last episode. Joy's back.

0:43.7

Hi. This episode won't be nearly as demanding as the last one, Joy. This is just a light chat about toxic masculinity.

0:50.6

It's going to be a breeze, isn't it? Compared to reading the Holy Scriptures. It's going to be easy, in it.

0:54.7

Yeah.

0:55.2

This is an excellent time for us to record, isn't it?

0:57.2

Because when I ask you what you've been up to, you've now actually got something to say other than I went to Greenbelt.

1:01.8

Yes.

1:02.4

So what have you been up to?

1:03.3

I went to Holland.

1:04.2

Ah, Holland. into what the difference was between Holland and the Netherlands. Yeah, I'm not sure. Tell me. So it turns out

1:11.5

the Netherlands is made up of 12 provinces maybe and provinces one and two are North Holland and South

1:20.0

Holland and those two together make up Holland and then there's lots of little ones around the

1:25.0

edge that make up the other 10. So we didn't actually leave either North or South Holland.

1:30.7

We bobbed between the two.

1:31.9

So literally we did go to Holland.

1:33.9

But I think there's a push to kind of refer to it all more as the Netherlands now, maybe because loads of people get confused.

1:40.0

That sounds more confusing than Great Britain and United Kingdom, which I don't understand.

1:45.6

No, exactly. But yeah, I think I could make my holiday sound like sheer hell for you.

1:51.8

So what we do is we go with a minimum of 10 other families. Really? It's already bad, isn't it?

1:59.7

Ten families? All of whose kids went to the same primary school.

2:02.6

Wow.
