I'm Mark Stephen.

In this edition, I'm actually down in Galloway in the south-west of Scotland. It's old-fashioned

hill farming country, which is something my guest, farmer and author Patrick Lorry is extremely proud

of. But it's also an area which has been and continues to be exploited for other purposes.

Things like forestry or wind farms,

now by foreign investors, so-called green lairds, which means that Patrick's approach to farming

is, frankly, becoming something of a minority pursuit. He's very committed to promoting biodiversity

and he's a huge fan of the curlew as you hear. But before we get to that, let's hear a bit about his cattle.

You'll have heard about belted galloway.

This is a Galloway native breed, but it's called the Rigget Galloway.

So these are two Galloways.

That's a rigged Galloway, the black and white cow with a white stripe down her back.

And this is a new bull that I've just got in yesterday

who's also a rig at Galloway but he's pure white and he's got a red nose and red ears and he's a bit of a bit of an experimental go through we'll see how he gets on

people mention Galloway cattle and you think automatically the belted galloways these are very different
