A mixed close close on Wall Street, I'm Henry Epp with the Marketplace Minute.

Major stock indexes were mixed today. The Dow Jones closed up less than a tenth percent.

The S&P 500 fell 8 tenths percent, the NASDAQ dropped nearly 2%.

Despite falling inflation, higher prices are holding back consumer spending on

snacks and soda.

Pepsi co leaders told investors today that the company saw sales volume drop last

quarter for its beverage and Frito lay divisions. The company's chief financial

officer said the decline was due to customers getting more price conscious.

30-year mortgage rates ticked down slightly in the past week,

now just shy of 6.9%, according to Freddie Mac.

Borrowing costs for home buyers are little changed

compared to a year ago, but down from a recent high of nearly 7.8

percent last fall. And General Motors plans to invest $900 million to retool a plant in Michigan

to build electric vehicles.

The Biden administration will commit $500 million,

part of a broader push announced today

to revamp auto plants around the country.
