Summary

From the ‘glorious CV’ of degree and doctorate at Cambridge and Oxford to working in the oil industry, from the hiddenness of urban ministry whilst being a Mum to being a courageous bishop, Jill burns with passion for the overlooked and the underrated. She’s bold and humble and gracious and more - just what the Church of England needs! Be inspired by her story, it’s a great listen.

Strong recommendation to get hold of her book ‘Lighting the Beacons: Kindling the Flame of Faith in our Hearts’, it’s a powerful read.

And so I said, you know, Lord, would you give me faith?

The effect of this is it's like I can, I get glimpses of what heaven might look like coming into places or into people,

or into, you know, what's the heavenly Lancaster, what's the heavenly Blackpool, what's the heavenly Blackburn.

Little glimpses, little trailers of what things could be. So I think, like, why not in 40 years?

Why would you not see a shift in our nation?

Welcome, everybody. This is Simon Gilbeau with Inspired. Inspired, if you knew to us, it's all

0:33.5

about amidst the sucker punches of life that we get and are blasted with constant dreariness

0:39.1

and negative news and fear-inducing stuff. We want to stir faith by meeting mates of mine from

0:44.1

all sorts of walks of life from across the spectrum who have had interesting, stimulating,

0:48.6

amazing, inspiring, all sorts of different adjectives to describe their experiences in life

0:54.0

and the nitty gritty of seeing how their faith has shaped them and has encouraged them to keep going. So hopefully you'll be encouraged when we finish this off in about 50 minutes. I'm sure you will be because we've got a fantastic guest this week. And it is Jill Duff. Welcome, Jill. Great to be with you, Simon. Yeah, fantastic to have you. So, I mean, the reason I wanted to get Jill on was that I read her book a few months ago, lighting the beacons, kindling the flame of faith in our hearts. And I just absolutely loved it. Jill, to give her a full title, is the Bishop of Lancaster. She's the right Reverend Dr. Jill Duff. She's, I mean, our overlap has

1:30.3

been over the years from about a decade ago at New Wine. She is now actually the chair of trustees

1:35.3

of New Wine. I loved your talk a few years ago, Jill, at the New Wine Leadership Conference in

1:39.9

Harrogate. That was brilliant. Jill studied chemistry at Cambridge, initially then did a doctorate at Oxford.

Another podcast with a different host could discuss your doctoral thesis, which was investigations of

1:52.7

redox coupled proton transfer by iron and sulfur cluster systems in proteins. I've got nothing

1:58.5

to say on that whatsoever. No, don't worry. All right, we'll skip that one.

2:03.7

And then you spent your early career in the oil industry. And anyway, I'm looking forward to

2:09.0

hearing a bit on all that before you went into the church. So we'll get to that. But Jill,

2:13.4

know very little about your background. Any significant moments in your in your childhood? Go for it.

2:20.4

Yes. Well, I'm from, I grew up in Bolton in Lancashire and from a family that didn't have faith,

2:25.8

but I went to the local Church of England primary school. And in some ways, I'm a Church of
