Summary

Doug Meyer joins Natalie on the podcast to discuss the release his book of Heroes: A Tribute. The book grew out of a traveling exhibition, which included 3 shows in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. "In 1981, Doug Meyer lost a dear friend to a mysterious new disease we now know was AIDS. Over the next few years, Doug went to seventy-nine funerals. In HEROES, Doug pays homage by way of portraiture to 50 innovative pioneers from the worlds of art, design, film, and dance, who were some of the first victims of AIDS and AIDS-related diseases. Among these individuals whose lives are celebrated in HEROES are Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring, Alvin Ailey, Gia, Rudolf Nureyev, Freddie Mercury, Rock Hudson, Tina Chow, Klaus Nomi, and Halston." https://dougmeyerstudio.com Purchase Heroes instagram: @doug_meyer Heroes: A Tribute Trade Edition | Doug Meyer’s SF Book Tour Canopy Space SF https://www.canopy.space/doug-meyer-book-signing/ Monday, June 24 | 5:30PM - 8:00PM 595 Pacific Ave 4th floor SF,  CA 94113Talk and signing event with this cool new space in SF’s design area. Oh, nice. Glad to hear that. It's been very warm here in California, almost a little too

0:55.5

warm. Thank you for joining us, and we'll kind of jump right in with you introducing yourself and

1:04.5

telling our listeners a little bit about you. Okay. I always find it a difficult thing to talk about

1:10.4

who I am and what I do because I do so many different things. But, uh, so I'm an artist, a designer. Um, I do site specific installations and a ton of different things. In the past, I was in publishing. I was, um, design and art directors for various media magazines and outlets. And, oh my gosh,

1:31.3

I've just kind of done so many things and I still do do a lot of these things and they all

1:35.9

kind of get incorporated into my work. But I'm really excited you guys are doing this podcast because I

1:40.4

think the gist of it is to be talking about this new book I have coming out called

1:44.4

Heroes of Tribute, which is a project that I worked on for about two and a half years, which is a,

1:50.2

it started out as an exhibition that traveled from New York to Miami and Los Angeles,

1:56.6

and then it was turned into a book.

1:58.2

And it is a sort of a celebration and a tribute to some of the 50 first creatives who died of AIDS.

2:04.8

And I'm very excited because the book just came out the day before yesterday on the 4th.

2:08.6

So it's now on sale and people can buy it.

2:12.9

Oh, that's awesome.

2:14.2

I didn't realize that it wasn't out yet.

2:16.7

So that is very cool. I have a copyright in front of me. It's gorgeous. So listeners, I'll post pictures and they can kind of get an idea of what we're talking about here. And just to give a little background to them on Heroes, it all kind of started out of a fundraiser dinner that you were invited to decorate or host.

2:37.1

Well, it was more than a dinner or whatever. They've been doing this for years. It's Diffa,

2:42.3

which is the design industry foundation for fighting AIDS. And they do these things. They're called
