| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting Podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. |
| 0:12.0 | So if you have hypothyroidism, how do you have hypothyroidism, I highly recommend that you take cod liver oil. |
| 0:27.7 | Let's talk about why. |
| 0:29.1 | There are three main key nutrients that the thyroid needs. |
| 0:33.4 | Number one, it needs iodine. |
| 0:34.9 | And iodine makes up the thyroid molecule itself. |
| 0:38.9 | In fact, when we talk about T4 or T3, we're talking about the number of iodine molecules. |
| 0:45.3 | Then you have selenium. Selenium is involved in an enzyme that allows the conversion from T4 to T3, |
| 0:54.3 | the active form of the thyroid hormone. |
| 0:57.8 | So you need selenium, it's a trace mineral. |
| 1:00.3 | So about 80% of this conversion happens in the liver |
| 1:04.4 | and 20% happens in the kidney. |
| 1:06.8 | So you need a healthy liver, |
| 1:08.5 | and you need a healthy kidney. |
| 1:11.2 | But vitamin A is involved in this other hormone called thyroid-stimulating hormone, |
| 1:17.7 | which is created from the pituitary, and it's sent down to the thyroid. |
| 1:22.0 | So it tells the thyroid what to do. |
| 1:24.2 | And this whole chain of events is on a negative feedback loop. In fact, the way they |
| 1:30.3 | diagnose hypothyroidism is with the thyroid stimulating hormone. If the thyroid stimulating hormone goes |
| 1:38.0 | up because there's no negative feedback coming back, that's one way they would diagnose a hypothyroid case. And when you have a vitamin A deficiency, |
| 1:48.4 | you have a massive increase in thyroid stimulating hormone. And that can even increase the size of the |
| 1:54.1 | thyroid as a goiter and actually decrease the absorption of iodine. So vitamin A is very important in thyroid function. So we have iodine, |
