conversation. Humans have always had an uneasy relationship with the sea. In our earliest days on

the water thousands of years ago, we christened our boats with blood as an offering to the gods of the deep.

We named our boats for women and sent them into the waves as symbolic brides for those gods,

Poseidon and Neptune.

Cultures all around the world have myths and legends about the terrifying creatures that inhabit the ocean,

from massive sea serpents to sirens and myrfolk.

Even the Bible tells the story of the fearsome Leviathan.

It makes the depths churn like a boiling cauldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.

It leaves a glistening wake behind it. One would think the deep had white hair.

Nothing on earth is its equal, a creature without fear.

It looks down on all that are haughty.

It is king over all that are proud.

When the makers of ancient maps came to the edge of the known world,

they chose four words to describe the vastness of the unknown sea. Here, there be monsters.

Were they right?

And they got a small beam of light again. True. Weird.

Elsner Garrison and Charles Moeller were fishing off Soldier's Key in Florida,
