Summary

From the moment she was a child on the Marine Corps Base in Oahu, she felt it—an awareness that seemed to rise from the ground beneath her feet, follow her through sterile school hallways, and settle into the shadows of her home. Dreams of a girl in a long blue dress, sprinting for her life. A locket slipping between wooden steps. A whisper inside a bathroom stall spelling out her name and a command she didn’t understand.

But Hawaii wasn’t the end.

Whatever watched her there crossed the ocean with her. It appeared in the doorways of California bedrooms, rattled locks, dragged footsteps across the second floor, and—one terrible night—wrapped invisible fingers around her ankle as she climbed the stairs. Even years later, inside a college dorm miles away from the places she thought she’d escaped, she still heard the shuffling footsteps of something that refused to forget her.
