Summary

In this episode historian Lauren Johnson explores Henry VIII's early years and his journey from modest prince to bold, uncompromising king.

| 0:58.3 | As Hampton Court Palace is his most famous home, a building Henry himself converted into |
| 1:03.4 | a palace of pleasure, a symbol of his power and wealth. |
| 1:08.4 | And it's that powerful Henry the Eighth that we all know so well the one who |
| 1:12.7 | appears in his most famous portrait by Hans Holbein so in this image he |
| 1:17.7 | dominates the frame meeting the viewer's eye almost daring you to challenge his |
| 1:22.6 | authority and even surrounded by sumptuous displays of his wealth, our gaze is drawn right to him. |
| 1:30.3 | But the Henry in this portrait, |
| 1:32.3 | and who put his stamp on Hampton Court Palace, |
| 1:34.3 | the one that we already all know fairly well, I think, |
| 1:38.3 | was already a fully grown adult. |
| 1:40.3 | If anything, by the time Holbein gets round to painting him, |
| 1:43.3 | Henry is pushing middle age by Tudor standards. |
