They were known for their ambition, wealth, arrogance, and ability to bounce back from scandal.

On this episode of a brief history, we look at Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and the son of Thomas

Howard, Third Duke of Norfolk. On the 19th of January, 1547, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey,

was executed on Tower Hill. He was the last person executed for treason in Henry the 8th's reign.

But who was he, and how did he cause the fall of the Howards? Born in 1517, Henry Howard was the son

of Thomas Howard, then the Earl of Surrey, and Elizabeth Stafford,

daughter of the Duke of Buckingham. On his mother's side, he could trace his ancestry back to

John of Gaunt and Thomas of Woodstock, both sons of Edward III. On his father's side, he could

trace his ancestry via the Moabay family, back to two children of
