For years and years, very few people knew the story of Helmut Heubner.

He was a German Mormon teenager in Hamburg who ignited a brief but bold moment of resistance to the Nazis.

And maybe the story is forgotten because there are quite a few of these small acts of resistance, Germans who couldn't reconcile their consciences with what they knew or were learning about Hitler in the war.

But Pugner's story, it's incredible. He would listen in secret to these BBC broadcasts on his brother's radio and he heard what the Nazis were hiding about the costs of war and their atrocities.

And so he used the typewriter of his church branch, his ward, and he carefully wrote out these leaflets about the war's futility and the Nazi lies.

And he recruited friends from the ward, including a boy named

Carl Heinz Schniba, to carry them throughout the city, to put them in mailboxes and on bulletin

boards in these public places. Now, eventually they were caught and they were arrested and brought

to trial. And Hübner managed to sustain that sense of defiance, but he was

executed at age 17. When the filmmaker Matt Whitaker learned about the story, this was about 20 years ago,

it was still pretty obscure, but Huberner's childhood friend, Carl Schnibbe, he was still alive.

In fact, he ended up not far from where Whitaker himself was living.

So Matt Whitaker made a documentary about Huber, and now he's made a future film,

which is just out in theaters called Truth and Treason.

And there's a moment in the film that Whitaker described for us at

Hübner's trial where this young man stood up to Hitler one more time. Throughout this whole

film, Helmut has been given opportunities to stand up.

And at first, you know, he just doesn't have the wherewithal, doesn't have the courage.

But he does start to take a stand when he starts putting out these leaflets.
