Summary

Paul and Amy open the box that is Clive Barker’s 1987 supernatural horror film Hellraiser! They break down the movie’s portrayal of gender roles, propose that horror films are often heightened versions of fairytales, and discuss why it’s especially terrifying when the victims in a horror story have agency. Plus: We tally your votes for the newest additions to the API list! Next week, our horror series continues with Jennifer’s Body! Hello everyone and welcome to on

Swoon!

I'm Amy Nicholson and I'm Paul Sheer and this is the podcast where we're trying to find the best movies of all time

0:39.3

and when we do we are sending them into outer space and Amy this list that we have been building to go to outer space

0:46.8

we spent a whole episode breaking down our last season what do we want to put on the list and we wrestled and we bartered

0:56.3

and then we also threw it to our listeners what did they want on the list where did we get it wrong where did we get it right

1:02.8

and I think the votes are in because the first question we asked was would you put Starship Troopers or Robocop on the list

1:13.8

now I'll just tell you if you forgot where I stood I really liked Robocop and then based on our conversation I was like but maybe Starship Troopers is a more realized version of what he really wanted to do

1:28.8

so I was really wrestling I was going back and forth between them both

1:31.8

and I was sticking up for Robocop I was like Robocop is just a flawless film I think that Starship Troopers reaches farther and maybe doesn't make it all that way

1:43.8

and so that we put it out to a vote and I feel so torn and conflicted now the votes came back the votes were very solid for Robocop technically I won

1:52.8

suddenly I feel like I lost because I came around to your point of view on Starship Troopers I started thinking you know what?

1:58.8

I want to see an ambitious mess on this list it's okay if it's Denise Richards on this list and we kind of floated that idea like what if we put Starship Troopers on and took off the other Wars attire Dr. Strangelove and I suddenly loved that idea

2:14.8

like why isn't our Wars attire a modern one and not from you know the Gold War and and the votes have spoken but now I am so sad that I push so hard for Robocop

2:25.8

well I got to say I came to your side as a little gift of the match I hear because I my gut was Robocop but my my highfalutin thought was Starship Troopers and if we want a brilliant mess on this list I still will fight when we get to this day to put the room

2:42.8

Tommy was those the room on here because I do believe it belongs here the other vote that was out for discussion was Blair Witch or Texas Chainsaw Massacre

2:54.8

now this is a tough one because I think we both really liked we like both of them we really did like both of them and my origin is very important

3:04.8

yes and you know look we're pitting movies that shouldn't even really be pitted against each other like there should be room for all of this

3:14.8

but we're not making a hundred best horror movie list we're making you know we're trying to be really selective in what we're putting and the votes came back in once again very heavy one sided almost for Texas Chainsaw Massacre
